| A friend of mine in Madison is looking for a romantic getaway for two to the Twin Cities. They're thinking of heading that way 3 weeks from now. They asked me because I used to live there... but I haven't lived there since 1991. So. I'm asking you.
Any suggestions? | comments: Leave a comment |

| When you walk in your front door, which room do you enter? a tiny little foyer that leads into the living room.
Do you have a dishwasher? Yes. His name is Cody.
Is your living room carpeted or does it have hardwood floors? Hardwood. There was carpet - fugly shaggy brown carpet - on all surfaces, it seemed, when we bought the house.
Do you keep your kitchen knives on the counter or in a drawer? Knife block on the counter.
House, apartment, duplex or trailer? Very small house.
How many bedrooms is it? Two real bedrooms, plus a finished basement w/bathroom that we call "the garden apartment".
Gas stove or electric? Gas.
Do you have a yard? Yes. It's a little house on a big lot.
What size TV is in the living room? Jim got a new TV for the holidays - he spent his royalty money on it. It's big and flat and hides in an armoire. We don't have cable so it's really just to watch DVDs and the occasional football or basketball game.
Are your plates in the same cupboard as your cups? Yep.
Is there a coffee maker sitting on your kitchen counter? No. The French press is in a cupboard.
What room is your computer in? It's a laptop, so it travels, but it lives mostly in the living room.
Are there pictures hanging in your living room? We're actually hanging some of Cody's prints this weekend. His work is fantastic.
Are there any themes found in your home? Um, we like orange.
What kind of laundry detergent do you use? I used to make laundry soap. now I buy the biodegradable stuff at the co-op.
Do you use dryer sheets? Nope. I do scent a piece of fabric with essential oil sometimes.
Curtains in your home? No, just bamboo blinds. I'm not in love with our window treatments, but honestly, in the grand scheme, they're last on my list.
What color is your fridge? White.
Is your house clean? More or less. it's a lot easier to keep a small house clean.
What room is the most neglected? Cody's room. My corner of the garden apartment (to be remedied this weekend).
Are the dishes in your sink/dishwasher clean or dirty? Probably dirty - Cody hasn't gotten to them yet.
How long have you lived in your home? 3 years next month!
Where did you live before? A different house less than a mile away.
Do you have one of those fluffy toilet lid covers on your toilet? No!
Do you have a scale anywhere in your house? I have a produce/kitchen scale. I have never owned a bathroom scale in my life.
How many mirrors are in your house? Living room has one, Cody has one, upstairs bathroom has two, Lilly has one, and there's one in the downstairs bathroom.
Look up. What do you see? A tin ceiling - I'm at the cafe.
Do you have a garage? Yes. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| I wish I could have gone to the Led Zeppelin show in London last night:
Thanking all the people who had come from more than 50 countries, Plant declared, "This is the 51st country" and commenced "Kashmir," which was the song most Led Zeppelin fans said they wanted to hear in a music magazine poll. It left the singer in tears and the audience, which had been long on its feet, hollering for more.
Back onstage, the encore inevitably took the form of "Whole Lotta Love." At the end, Plant saluted Ertegun and Atlantic Records and said good night. It looked like it was all over, but then, Led Zeppelin burst back for a resounding version of "Rock and Roll," leaving the packed house celebrating the extraordinarily good fortune that allowed them to witness it.

| I quit smoking the cigarettes 3 years ago today. It was election night and my daughter's birthday.

| Right here for you to enjoy.
It's American Music Club from 1991 - "Rise", from the album Everclear.
It's powerful, spacious, chilly, and I've probably put it on every last one of my for-public-consumption mixes.
Enjoy! | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| A friend had the following questions for me:
"1. what are the popular hip parenting blogs or websites? and feminist mom sites?
2. as the mom of a tween-- is there a girls magazine/media that isn't say, "teenvogue" or "disney radio"?"
I'm so out of it, I have no idea how to respond.

| Got a farmers market near you?
Do you go?
In comments, those of you who want to respond, please do so and let me know where yr from, if the market has a website, etc. Tell me what kinds of things are sold, how often the market takes place, what kinds of rules they have about selling (organic only? Does the food have to be from a certain number of miles away?). Is there food at yr market from local restaurants? Do you love yr market? Why? Do you hate it? Why? My inquiring mind wants to know!

Cody and some of his friends organized an anti-war protest - a "die-in" - on the U of I campus yesterday. Most of the participants were high school kids from at least 4 different schools, plus some parents and other adult supporters. At its peak there were about 75-100 people protesting, not including spectators, and some folks from the local ABC affiliate came to cover for the 6 o'clock news. The police also showed up, but kept their distance.

| I was having a nice leisurely read on the couch - new Harry Potter book, of course - when all of a sudden, I noticed something on page 333. It was a line of text that read "Long live Harry Potter". In handwriting.
Dudes? It's my font. You know, Wordy Diva?

| I'm pretty sure my laptop died last night - I can't get the HD to boot after getting the Blue Screen Of Death.
Some stuff was backed up, and some wasn't. I'm pretty philosophical about it all. I had such a great weekend that a mere hard drive death wasn't going to get to me. You know?
I'll be "needing" a new one at some point, but first I'm going to see if a) this is worth repairing and b) if it's not, then pulling some shit off the HD.

| Kindness of the World by Joe Henry. And before that, Short Man's Room.
I freely admit that it's personal with me and these two records. Well, these two records and that record by Maria McKee that came out the same year (1993) - You Gotta Sin to Get Saved. Oh, Em, Gee.
Has anyone ever heard these records? The backing bands are basically the same.
Sigh. | comments: Leave a comment |
